Paulo Jamece, can you please introduce your brand?

I’m Paulo Jamece, the visionary behind Sleeping Bubbles Ltd. It all began with a mesmerising night in Bali, where a Bubble Tent ignited my passion for creating unforgettable outdoor experiences worldwide.

At Sleeping Bubbles, we redefine luxury camping with our signature Bubble Tents, featuring smart lock doors and silent blowers for uninterrupted rest. What truly distinguishes us is our unwavering commitment to sustainability.

Our self-sustained Sleeping Bubbles are powered by renewable energy. From solar panels to wind turbines, we ensure guests enjoy luxury while minimising their environmental impact. However, our vision extends beyond aesthetics. We specialise in extraordinary glamping resorts, blending nature’s beauty with high-end comfort. It’s about connecting people with the earth while indulging them in luxury.

Our mission goes further: We’re committed to sustainability, striving to establish a tourism model that promotes economic growth, empowers local communities, and conserves our precious environment. With each Sleeping Bubbles project, we’re not just creating a retreat; we’re shaping a legacy of responsible tourism.

What motivated you to start a sustainability business?

Our motivation to start Sleeping Bubbles as a sustainability business stems from a deep-rooted desire to make a positive impact on the world. We recognised the pressing need for businesses to operate in a way that respects and preserves the environment while also benefiting local communities.

This conviction, coupled with our passion for travel and nature, inspired us to create a hospitality venture that not only offers unique experiences but also champions sustainability at its core.

We firmly believe that businesses have a responsibility to be stewards of the planet, and starting Sleeping Bubbles allowed us to align our values with our entrepreneurial pursuits. By providing eco-friendly accommodations and promoting responsible tourism practices, we aim to demonstrate that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

Our ultimate goal is to inspire others to embrace sustainability in their own lives and business endeavours, creating a ripple effect of positive change for generations to come.

Does your business address any of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development goals?

At Sleeping Bubbles, we actively contribute to several of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Beyond offering luxurious escapes, our glamping sites serve as hubs for unique learning experiences, promoting education on biodiversity and sustainable living (SDG 4: Quality Education). Our Co-Working spaces facilitate skill development, advancing SDG 4 like never before.

But our commitment extends further. We champion eco-friendly practices, promoting responsible water usage through initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and water-saving measures, aligning with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Economic growth shouldn’t harm our planet. That’s why we’re proud to create job opportunities in rural areas through our Sleeping Bubbles accommodations, contributing to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth while supporting local communities.

As stewards of the land, we’re dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism. By encouraging visitors to appreciate biodiversity and supporting environmental conservation efforts like reforestation and habitat restoration, we’re making progress towards SDG 15: Life on Land.

Sustainable Development Goals

How do you define sustainability for your business?

Sustainability is our guiding principle at Sleeping Bubbles. It means finding harmony between environmental care, community engagement, and financial resilience.

- Environmental Care: We prioritise eco-friendly practices, from using sustainable materials to minimising energy consumption.

- Community Engagement: We actively support local communities through job creation and partnerships with local businesses.

- Financial Resilience: Sustainability isn’t just about being green; it’s also about ensuring long-term economic viability.

- Continuous Improvement: We’re always looking for new ways to innovate and improve our sustainability practices.

Sustainability is integral to who we are and what we do at Sleeping Bubbles.

How receptive are customers when you are pitching your sustainable idea? Is sustainability alone enough to stand out?

Customers have been really receptive to our sustainable idea! People nowadays are increasingly aware of environmental issues and are excited to support businesses that prioritise sustainability. However, we’ve found that while sustainability is a key factor, it’s not always enough on its own to stand out. Customers also look for quality, affordability, and unique experiences. So, while our sustainability approach grabs attention, we make sure to offer a fantastic overall package to truly stand out in the market.

Do you think there is enough support from the government (grants & other benefits) for sustainable startups?

Well, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. While there are existing support schemes and grants for sustainable start-ups, there’s a consensus that more could be offered. It’s a positive beginning, yet there’s clear scope for enhancing government backing for sustainability-driven businesses. We’ve been fortunate to secure grants promoting sustainability and benefited from business support from Worcestershire County Council.

How do you keep yourself up to date with the rapid changes happening in the sustainability space?

Staying updated with sustainability changes is vital. We’re always at the forefront of innovation, ensuring we’re well-informed about the latest developments. For instance, we’re set to launch a low-cost co-working space using our Continental Bubbles.

These spaces accommodate 20–30 users, equipped with top-notch hardware and software, including computers, laptops, and tablets. With access to high-speed satellite broadband internet and a built-in library, we aim to provide a unique digital experience. Our commitment extends to the construction sector, where we specialise in using pressurised air as a structural material, significantly reducing Carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional methods.

What are your key sustainability metrics?

Our key sustainability metrics include energy efficiency, waste reduction, and community impact. We track our progress in these areas closely to ensure we’re meeting our goals. Additionally, we’ve partnered with the University of Birmingham in the Ateta Programme and the LoCop programme with Worcestershire County Council to further enhance our sustainability initiatives and contribute positively to the community.

What are the areas you think you need to work on to become a more eco-friendly company and is there any potential partner you are eyeing?

We’re continually striving to enhance our eco-friendliness, with a focus on reducing our carbon footprint and optimising waste management. Additionally, we’re eager to elevate our sustainable sourcing practices.

Regarding partnerships, we’re actively seeking collaboration with local organisations that align with our sustainability values. One potential partner is a nearby environmental NGO specialising in conservation and sustainability. By teaming up with them, we aim to amplify our impact on the planet.

Are your products/services “certified” sustainable by an internationally recognised organisation?

Our products and services adhere to strict European laws and safety standards, as evidenced by certifications such as SGS, EN71, and Lead-Free. While we don’t currently hold certifications from internationally recognised sustainability organisations, we prioritise sustainable practices in our operations. We also collaborate with suppliers who provide furniture and equipment certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring responsible sourcing of materials. While we aim to achieve sustainability certifications in the future, our focus remains on maintaining high-quality, environmentally conscious practices.

What would be the few gives/asks that you would like to share with the community?

A few things we’d like to share with the community are our commitment to sustainability, our dedication to providing top-notch service, and our desire to collaborate and engage with local initiatives. In return, we ask for support in spreading awareness about sustainable practices, feedback on how we can improve, and continued collaboration to make a positive impact together.
